Romney Advisor Gregory Mankiw Supported a Carbon Tax in 2007

This morning, Mitt Romney tweeted: “My new economic policy team — Glenn Hubbard, Gregory Mankiw, Jim Talent @ Vin Weber. Welcome to the team.”

As National Confidential points out, Mankiw argued for a carbon tax in 2007. “If we want to reduce global emissions of carbon, we need a global carbon tax,” he wrote. Adding, “Convincing China of the virtues of a carbon tax, however, may prove to be the easy part. The first and more difficult step is to convince American voters, and therefore political consultants, that “tax” is not a four-letter word.”

Does Mankiw still think a carbon tax is a good idea? More importantly, does Romney now think so? If the moderators of any of the upcoming GOP debates do a decent job, we’ll find out soon.
