Support for Offshore Drilling Has Plummeted Among Both Parties

Last month I looked at the demographic breakdowns of an Economist poll on offshore drilling and found that the practice was most popular among Republicans and Americans who are white, wealthy or elderly. While none of that has changed, new polling from Rasmussen shows that support for the controversial practice has plummeted among both Democrats and Republicans in the wake of the ongoing catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico.

As you can see, support has dropped significantly among all likely voters, including both Republicans and Democrats. Support is currently at its lowest levels since Rasmussen began polling on the issue in 2008.
Please keep in mind that, given Rasmussen’s tendency to produce conservative leaning results (see: here, here and here), the levels of support shown aren’t necessarily accurate. What they do show is that support for offshore drilling has plummeted in just the past few weeks.
The data for the above chart is from crosstabs of the following six Rasmussen surveys: June 2008, August 2008, November 2008, December 2009, April 2010 and May 2010.
